Starting from the top is the Chicago skyline. In the middle of the shield, the four red stars and two blue stripes represent the Chicago flag. To the left is the lion from the Chicago Art Institute. The man blowing wind to your right represents the origin for nickname of Chicago ‘The Windy City.’ The nickname came from our history of having long winded politicians. The banner at the bottom of the shield reads, March 1837, this is the year Chicago was established as a city.
